Blackbeard Espresso started as an idea created by lifelong best friends.

In Autumn 2013, Adam Temple and Stephen Young found themselves at a career crossroads, After working for years in the mortgage industry, a decision needed to be made: continue on the same path they were on, or bet on themselves and take a leap.

Having a longtime passion for specialty coffee and coffeeshops, Adam knew a coffee business was his dream, but understanding the typical initial investment of a brick and mortar renovation and business startup costs, it often seemed as though it would stay as just that…a dream.

Stephen, although itching to make the break from office life, was more cautious in the beginning. “I remember discussing it half-heartedly at first, but the more I thought about it, I saw opportunity” Stephen noted “Having the influences of other entrepreneurs I knew personally, seeing them carve their own paths, I was ready.

As the discussion continued, the question of “where” posed a significant challenge. Many areas in the city where a coffee shop would fit were already flush with great local options. But, having noticed the recent rise in popularity of food trucks at that time, Adam brought up the idea for a coffee shop on wheels. “Instead of staying in one spot initially, what if we could be anywhere?” Adam recalls thinking.

So, in October 2013, they made a trip to Lexington, KY to purchase a used bread delivery truck and got to work. Starting as a huge metal box, they had their work cutout for them. Installing insulation, framing, flooring, electrical work, equipment, etc. was no easy task in one of the harshest winters in recent memory. “In retrospect, I think it was good for us to start from a place that was not easy.. We had to really soul-search, and persevere in a lot of ways, and sought no crowdfunding, donations, etc., so we had no choice but to rely on each other and the chemistry we’ve shared for so many years.” From 2014-2017, Blackbeard Espresso was primarily a mobile operation, brewing around the streets and event circuit of Louisville in almost any weather, just hoping to build the brand any way possible. Day by day, week by week, month by month, the events were growing, and the business was starting to look like it might just work. Still, the dream of owning a local coffee shop was alive and waiting to be realized.

Finally in April of 2018, they found a space that seemed perfect, and the talks became reality when they signed a lease for the first brick and mortar location of Blackbeard Espresso. 718 W Main St is right in the heart of Museum Row in Louisville, KY. Surrounded by local hotspots like the Frazier History Museum, Kentucky Science Center, Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, KMAC, Muhammad Ali Center, 21c Hotel and Art Gallery, and more, the shop is in a great spot to conveniently serve anyone exploring some of the most impressive 19th century architecture you’ll find in the nation.
