Located in downtown Louisville, KY, Blackbeard Espresso is an idea started by two lifelong friends.
Blackbeard Espresso started with humble beginnings in autumn of 2013 - fresh off a recent downsize layoff from their previous jobs, founders Adam Temple and Stephen Young purchased a used Chevy P30 truck from a bread delivery fleet in Lexington, KY.
Having seen the recent rise in popularity of food trucks around the nation and in the city at that time, Adam brought up the initial idea for a coffee shop on wheels on a day at the office where both knew their current positions weren’t going to be available much longer in a cyclical mortgage biz. Stephen recalls his thoughts during this time:
“I remember discussing it half heartedly at first, but the more I thought about it, I saw opportunity. Having the influences of other entrepreneurs who I knew personally, seeing them carve their own path, I was ready to provide the wherewithal to make the break from office life.”
From 2014-2017, Blackbeard Espresso was primarily based as just a mobile operation, working the streets and event circuit of Louisville. Day by day, month by month, customer by customer, the events were getting larger and the brand was growing. On occasion, discussions would come and go on whether this is something that could be done in tandem with a brick and mortar location.
The idea of a brick and mortar location was always a dream of mine. I went back and forth for awhile over the decision on whether to go all in with the shop; to leave my previous career and proceed full-time into this venture was unnerving to say the least. However, when I found this space in West Main, I knew we could make this work in tandem with the coffee truck. - Adam Temple
Finally in April of 2018, the talks became reality and a lease was signed for a space in heart of Museum Row - Historic West Main in Louisville, KY. Surrounded by likes of Frazier History Museum, KY Science Center, Louisville Slugger, Muhammad Ali Center, 21c Hotel and Art Gallery, the shop is settled in what is some of Louisville’s most beautiful late 19th century architecture.
